What are CO2 Heat Pumps?

CO2 heat pumps are heating and cooling systems that use carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant instead of traditional refrigerants such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). They work by compressing and circulating CO2 gas, which absorbs and releases heat as it goes through different phases of pressure and temperature. CO2 heat pumps are considered more environmentally friendly than traditional heat pumps because CO2 is a natural, non-toxic, and non-flammable gas that has a low global warming potential (GWP) and does not contribute to ozone depletion.

Whilst straightforward to apply design diligence must be exercised with respect to the maximum return temperature to a CO2 Heat Pump being 35C. This is a factor of the way in which CO2 refrigerant can be used in a Heat Pump and must be acknowledged and adhered to.

There are several reasons why you should choose CO2 heat pumps. Firstly, CO2 heat pumps are more environmentally friendly than traditional heat pumps that use refrigerants with high GWP values. CO2 is a natural gas that has a low GWP and does not contribute to ozone depletion, making it a more sustainable option. Additionally, CO2 heat pumps are more energy-efficient than traditional HVAC systems, which can lead to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions. They can also be used for both heating and cooling, providing year-round comfort. Finally, CO2 heat pumps are often quieter and require less maintenance than traditional HVAC systems, making them a convenient and cost-effective solution.
