FAQ | Pure Thermal

1. Are there any regulatory or legal requirements regarding refrigeration and air-conditioning technology which have to be taken into consideration?

No: due to its design, the eChiller is currently not subject to any regulations. The system utilises natural refrigerant and hence does not sit within the F-Gas phase out regulations.

2. What do I need to consider when setting up and installing an eChiller?

There is no difference between the setup and installation of the eChiller and that of a conventional chiller. Please note that the eChiller is only designed for indoor use, but a dedicated machine room is not necessary. You will find all the necessary information in the operating manual, as well as a suggestion for the hydraulic connection.

3. What do I need to consider with regard to the electrical connection?

There are no special requirements to consider. More detailed information can be found in the technical data sheet.

4. Is it problematic for the eChiller to work with unusually high cooling water temperatures?

No. Because the eChiller works with a vacuum in the refrigerant circuit, no high-pressure switch is required. If the temperature level of the cooling water rises above the technically possible value at the operating point, the chilled water outlet temperature is also automatically raised.

5. Does the water in the eChiller need to be treated or processed in any way?

No, only pure tap water (R718) is used for the single filling.

6. Does the water in the internal closed loop of the eChiller need to be replaced?

No, the water never needs to be replaced.

7. What do I need to do to ensure longlasting, trouble-free operation?

Additionally to regular, annual maintenance, it is also important – as with all technical systems – to check the unit for abnormalities and unusual sounds. This also includes the peripheral chilled and cooling water system (e.g. cleaning of strainers and the cooler).

8. How often is expert technical maintenance required?

Each system is principally offered with remote access. This includes continuous monitoring of performance and efficiency data, which reduces regular maintenance to a minimum. But even without remote access, the maintenance overheads are very low compared to conventional refrigeration systems.

9. Do you have a 24-hour emergency service?

Yes, this requires a maintenance and emergency service contract.

10. Is the eChiller already being manufactured in series production?

Yes, the eChiller has been produced since the end of 2015 and has been available as a serial appliance since the beginning of 2016.

11. Can the unit be integrated into a building management system?

Yes, by default the eChiller comes with a hardware interface and a data interface with the Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP protocols. All other common communication protocols are optionally available (e.g. BACnet IP, OPC UA, SNMP, Profibus DP, Profinet, etc.).

12. Can multiple units be combined to achieve performance in excess of 30 kW?

Yes, with parallel operation.

13. Is the eChiller available with different cooling capacities?

Yes, for a chilled water outlet temperature of e.g. 18° C, the eChiller is available with a 30 kW and a 35 kW compressor.

14. What refrigeration capacity is covered by the eChiller?

The eChiller covers a refrigeration capacity range from 20 to 300 kW.

15. What is the lowest possible chilled water outlet temperature?

Currently, the minimum possible chilled water outlet temperature is 10° C. However, the eChiller works optimally in a temperature range between 16° C and 22° C.

16. Is cooling required for the eChiller?

Like any conventional refrigeration machine, the eChiller must be cooled. An optimally configured dry-cooler can be purchased from Green Thermal Energy if required. Information on the specifications can be found in the technical data sheet.

17. In which applications are eChillers currently in use?

IT cooling, industrial process cooling (plastics industry), comfort cooling (LowEx cooling) and others.

18. Which applications are most economically viable?

The eChiller is especially suited to all applications with constant cooling requirements. Examples include the cooling of data centres and server rooms, as well as industrial process cooling (waste heat from plastic injection moulding, machining centres, chemical processes, bioreactors). In comfort cooling, the LowEx Cooling application (in concrete core activation, chilled ceilings) is noteworthy.

19. Up to 80 % energy savings – compared to what?

The comparison is made to a conventional chiller without free cooling.

20. Can the eChiller be used as a chiller and heat pump in combination?

This is technically possible, depending on the application. The implementation is currently in progress.

21. Is the eChiller manufactured and sold by efficient energy?

Yes, development, production and distribution all occur at the efficient energy headquarters in Feldkirchen near Munich.
