The overriding design advice from Pure Thermal is to reinforce the point that High Temperature Heat Pumps should be utilised only to operate at a high operating set point only when required in order to generate the highest efficiency levels possible for each particular application.

High Temperature Capability provides application flexibility:

  • Minimise retrofit emitter modifications by operating the Heat Pump at High Temperature during high demand periods i.e. increase flow temperatures to minimise emitter/coil dimensions via sizing retrofit emitters at average winter temperatures not at the lowest/very short-term minimum temperatures.
  • Use Wide Delta T High Temperature flexibility to accumulate and store thermal energy i.e. High Temperature Heat Pumps provide an efficient means of charging Thermal Batteries for both heating and hot water use.
  • High Temperature Capable Heat Pumps can be applied to provide immediate carbon savings for process and production applications by generating High Grade Thermal Energy via recycling waste heat that is currently sent to waste.

 

Providing High Temperature Heat Pumps on a Supply & Commission/Maintain basis the Pure Thermal approach is application based with a committed approach to providing best advice from the initial concept through to more detailed Heat Pump Selection & Specification discussions.

Pure Thermal Industrial Heat Pumps and Pure Thermal Commercial Heat Pumps are able to provide very high temperature up to 120°C whist operating with the Lowest Global Warming/Low Carbon Refrigeration Systems. Whether satisfying a retrofit application or a new project then Pure Thermal have a range of high specification High Temperature Heat Pumps to exceed the application demands from 30kW to 3000kW+.

Application flexibility is key to delivering both the lowest operating costs and also the highest levels of carbon savings. Pure Thermal High Temperature Heat Pumps are available in single stage (Monobloc) or Two Stage system configuration to match an applications requirement.

Monbloc Pure Thermal Commercial High Temperature Heat Pump units with single a stage refrigeration system are able to deliver an 80°C output temperature down to a -5°C external temperature. This removes the need to specify a cascade or two stage (2 x heat pump) system for medium capacity applications.

For larger application the Pure Thermal PLUS SO System delivers a Two Stage High Temperature Heat Pump option to 3000kW+ with single system control & operation. With PLUS SO the control of the first stage High Temperature Heat Pump and the second stage Water/Water unit is completely self-contained to provide the next generation of large capacity Two Stage High Temperature Heat Pump systems.

Where waste heat is available a Pure Thermal Industrial High Temperature Heat Pump can operate with dual or multiple source configuration. This means that the unit will operate as an High Temperature Heat Pump but importantly also has the ability to operate with a second source to provide increased levels of efficiency. For example, an application may have a cooing requirement through the heating season, but varying in time and capacity, this means that a14°C flow is available from the chilled water return at certain times. Therefore if the external temperature is 7°C then the Pure Thermal Dual Source Heat Pump can operate using the 14°C cooling water return and not lower temperature air as its source heat which increases efficiency and hence uses less input electricity to operate.

Identifying the most appropriate system design is key to any project and to assist in this process Pure Thermal High Temperature Heat Pumps can be provided with a Heat Pump Ready Verification Service which identifies the most appropriate & available system options to deliver the highest level of efficiency. At this stage, the type of Heat Pump is secondary as the focus is on providing the best advice based on the opportunity that the application presents.

WHAT ARE HIGH TEMPERATURE HEAT PUMPS?

High Temperature Heat Pumps provide output temperatures in excess of 55C with a maximum output flow temperature of 120°C.

Pure High Temperature Heat Pumps are available from 30kW to 1,500kW utilising both Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) HFO and Natural refrigerants.(CO2 & Hydrocarbon)

The range of Pure Thermal Heat Pumps includes Single Stage and Two Stage High Temperature 80C and Very High Temperature 120C units with two main system configurations available:

This is a HFO range that can deliver on both retrofit and new projects.
Delivering 70°C to a minimum -10°C ambient/source temperature and able to operate with wide heating system flow/return temperatures providing the specifier with a highly flexible modular selection choice.

Retrofit Applications

Higher output temperatures often negate the need to make changes to the emitter/distribution system that the Heat Pump is being installed into providing installation cost savings.

Retrofit applications where Higher Temperatures are needed for only a proportion of the year are now viable via A High Temperature Retrofit Heat Pump system without the need for additional heat sources.

High Temperature Heat Pumps widen the scope for Heat Pump application and enable Carbon and Cost savings to be achieved across a wider range of projects and applications that would otherwise have utilised high carbon fossil fuels.

The typical barriers to the utilisation of heat pumps within an existing installation revolve around the heating system. Primarily the emitter refurbishment/replacement costs in order for the heating system to be able to operate at standard circa 45°C standard heat pump operating temperatures.

In most cases, these refurbishment costs and the practical problems of modifying existing heating systems mean that 45°C or 55°C heat pump use is not possible.

New Build Applications

The typical barriers to the utilisation of heat pumps within a new installation revolve around the hot water production. Hot Water production at 65°C is higher than standard heat pumps which are unable to provide this output.

In most cases the additional installation costs and running costs of a fossil fuel system to provide the hot water requirements, make heat pumps a less attractive cost and carbon saving solution.
