What are Hydrocarbon Heat Pumps?

Hydrocarbon heat pumps utilise only natural refrigerants, the most practical to apply is hydrocarbon Propane R290 as it removes the need for users to comply with FGAS regulations. Pure Thermal hydrocarbon heat pumps operate with the natural refrigerant R290 which importantly provides both a Low GWP (Global Warming Potential) of just 3 (see the graph below which puts into context the GWP figures for various refrigerants) whilst also providing a practical and flexible hydrocarbon refrigerant option with reduced environmental impact.

In recent years, the potential environmental implications of conventional refrigerants such as CFCs and HFCs and the increased legislation relating to the manufacture, distribution, and use of environmentally harmful refrigerants has led manufacturers and system developers to identify suitable alternative organic refrigerants. This has led to the use of naturally occurring hydrocarbons for various heat pump applications that provide a reduced environmental impact.

This new generation of environmentally friendly heat pumps are referred to as hydrocarbon heat pumps.

R290 (Propane) is the most practical natural hydrocarbon refrigerant to apply within a heat pump, delivering an operating temperature up to 70C whilst being straightforward to apply with no minimum return temperature restrictions (as is the case with CO2 natural refrigerant heat pumps).

Hydrocarbon Heat Pumps have  the ability to operate at high temperatures, making them ideal for a range of applications where both operating  efficiency and noise levels are important including residential and commercial heating and cooling applications, as well as manufacturing and  industrial processes.
