Hydrocarbon heat pumps utilise only natural refrigerants, the most practical to apply is hydrocarbon Propane R290 as it removes the need for users to comply with FGAS regulations. Pure Thermal hydrocarbon heat pumps operate with the natural refrigerant R290 which importantly provides both a Low GWP (Global Warming Potential) of just 3 (see the graph below which puts into context the GWP figures for various refrigerants) whilst also providing a practical and flexible hydrocarbon refrigerant option with reduced environmental impact.
In recent years, the potential environmental implications of conventional refrigerants such as CFCs and HFCs and the increased legislation relating to the manufacture, distribution, and use of environmentally harmful refrigerants has led manufacturers and system developers to identify suitable alternative organic refrigerants. This has led to the use of naturally occurring hydrocarbons for various heat pump applications that provide a reduced environmental impact.
This new generation of environmentally friendly heat pumps are referred to as hydrocarbon heat pumps.
R290 (Propane) is the most practical natural hydrocarbon refrigerant to apply within a heat pump, delivering an operating temperature up to 70C whilst being straightforward to apply with no minimum return temperature restrictions (as is the case with CO2 natural refrigerant heat pumps).
Due to their use of natural refrigerants, the hydrocarbon heat pump range of applications that can be used includes those where low environmental impact is a priority, or areas where legislation restricts fossil fuel use.
Where sustainability standards must be achieved to meet client or planning restrictions or regulations, the Pure Thermal hydrocarbon heat pump range provides a highly efficient, practical, and cost effective solution, whilst future proofing the installation completely by removing the application completely from F Gas regulation and reporting requirements.
Alongside the huge environmental benefits, hydrocarbon heat pump units provide a practical and efficient alternative to standard HFC heat pumps. For example, a CO2 heat pump providing high temperature hot water is able to deliver a COP of up to 4 when heating incoming mains water from 10°c to 65°c.
With the capability to operate at temperatures suitable for medium to high temperature applications, the Pure Thermal hydrocarbon heat pump range can be specified for a wide range of applications including retrofit and new projects.
Hydrocarbon heat pumps provide high efficiency heating and simultaneous cooling solutions with significantly lower operating noise levels that many other alternatives. Hydrocarbon Heat Pumps have the ability to operate at high temperatures, making them ideal for a range of applications where both operating efficiency and noise levels are important including residential and commercial heating and cooling applications, as well as manufacturing and industrial processes.
Efficiency will be dependent on individual project conditions and requirements. An individual illustration can be provided with regard to capital cost, operational costs, and return on capital, based on actual site-specific information.
