The largest data centre waste heat recovery (“WHR”) project in the world will be across Microsoft‘s cloud campuses in Helsinki, Finland, where server heat will feed the district network, be upgraded by heat pumps, and used to keep homes & buildings warm – see the large heat pump pictured below.
Some estimates show that this WHR project may correspond to ~1% of emissions reductions required to meet Finnish carbon neutrality targets.
Informative write-up in Bloomberg from Kari Lundgren, Lars Paulsson and team about the WHR project, featuring good comments from Microsoft’s Gilda Amorosi!
